Belize City took another step towards replacing its iconic hand-cranked swing bridge as government ministers met with a survey team from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) last week.
Belize City’s Swing Bridge crosses Haulover Creek and its mouth. It is believed to be the world’s only functioning manually operated swing bridge. The steel bridge, which dates from the 1920s, is not often opened except on ceremonial occasions.
The replacement project aims to improve the city’s resilience to flooding.
