Councillors in Coquitlam in Canada have spoken in favour of six rather than four lanes for the replacement of the Pattullo Bridge.
Metro Vancouver's regional transportation authority TransLink is working the local cities of Coquitlam, New Westminster and Surrey to decide on the whether a four or six lane replacement structure should be built.
The councillors in Coquitlam preferred the idea of providing increased capacity from the outset.
The bridge was opened in 1937 and faces a number of challenges, including seismic and structural concerns. Cost of the replacement has been put at approximately US$1 billion.
