The Deh Cho Bridge in Canada's Northwest Territories is now expected to come in at US$14.35 million over budget, costing a total of US$174 million, the Department of Transportation has said. A new contractor is set to be appointed shortly to complete construction.
The cost overrun arose from a redesign of the bridge, which caused a one year delay, a year of lost revenue and the requirement for new quotes for the final phase of construction.
The bridge is now 50% complete and steps have been taken to improve management of the project and reduce uncertainty. Negotiations for the appointment of a new general contractor are in their final stages and a contract is expected to be in place within two weeks.
