A team made up of Heneghan Peng Architects, Arup and Mitchel & Associates has won the competition to design a crossing of Germany's River Valley to link St Goar and Sankt Goarshausen. Their prize is about US$53,000.

The design will be shown to UNESCO in June. The bridge is close to the Loreley Rock on the river's eastern bank, which has been a world heritage site since 2002 prompting concerns that a bridge could put the status at risk.

Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state's transport minister Hendrik Hering announced the choice of the winning design as one that would fit harmoniously into the valley. The bridge features a curving steel hollow box superstructure and is described as preserving lightness and transparency.
