Known as El Frutal Bridge or Metro Bridge, the double-decker crossing comprises a 560m main structure with 2,378m of approach viaducts extending across steep topography.

The structure will sit in the southern metropolitan corridor of Guatemala City, just north of Villa Nueva, and cross the deep ravine of the Río El Frutal, providing a new connection between the wholesale market district and major north-south arterial road Avenida Petapa, around 12km south of Guatemala City’s historic centre.

The upper level carries a four-lane roadway capable of supporting heavy freight and general traffic flows while also accommodating pedestrians and cyclists. The lower level is designed as a fully integrated corridor for Guatemala’s planned Metro system.

The project is embedded in the Ley de Infraestructura Vial Prioritaria approved in late 2024, which mandates construction and assigns funding streams. The estimated cost of the bridge is US$138 million.

Municipal leaders state that nearly all feasibility and technical engineering studies have been completed, with only the formal integration of CIV technical teams outstanding before procurement and execution planning can begin.

Construction is expected to start in 2027 subject to national approval of the final design package.
