Namyangju City and Hanam City have begun advancing plans for a new eco-friendly suspension bridge across the Han River, envisioned as a signature link between key recreation areas on both banks. The initiative was formally announced on 22 January as part of a broader cooperation framework between the two municipalities, located about 20-26km east from Seoul, to improve ecological connectivity and expand sustainable tourism assets in the region.

The proposed suspension bridge would avoid placing piers or pylons in the main river channel, thereby minimising disturbance to the aquatic ecosystem. Once completed, the bridge is expected to integrate major riverside destinations, including Hanam Misajeong Park, Hangang Dunchi and Namyangju’s Sampae district, into a single eco-friendly tourism belt anchored around the Paldang Lake–Han River corridor, providing residents and visitors with expanded recreational access while safeguarding the river’s ecological character.

The project forms a core component of a joint environment-oriented, value-oriented, regional win-win strategy, through which the two cities aim to broaden low-impact tourism opportunities. According to officials, the suspension-bridge project will proceed through a structured planning and review process.

A feasibility study and resident-opinion gathering phase is slated for the first half of the year, after which the project would enter detailed environmental review and early engineering. Construction is currently targeted to begin in 2028, pending the outcome of the studies.
