The Pacific island of Guam will replace five bridges to improve its transport backbone and future readiness.

The bridges on Route One connect every village on the island, which has a population of around 170,000. The structures are considered functionally obsolete, as they were not built to handle the present day weight and frequency of commercial and military traffic. The new structures will also improve the island’s resilience against natural disasters.

Guam is an unincorporated territory of the United States and is considered to be of strategic military significance. Funding for the project comes from the US Department of Defense and the Federal Highway Administration.

The project will begin in December, and the expected completion date will be in 2027.
