The John A Roebling Suspension Bridge linking the US states of Ohio and Kentucky closes to road traffic this week for a US$16.2 million programme of repairs and repainting. Pedestrians will be able to continue using the bridge during the months of closure.
The bridge is one of five that connect Cincinnati in Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Its 322m main span was the world's longest on its completion in 1866.
A local group, the Covington-Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee, is seeking to raise US$450,000 to replace the decorative lights to preserve the 'feel' of the bridge. The original lights have been removed in preparation for painting the bridge and will not be replaced under the project.
