Delaware Department of Transportation has today issued a request for qualifications for the design and build contract for the Indian River Inlet Bridge. It has announced that the bridge is now to be considerably longer than originally planned and that its cost estimate has risen from US$130 million to US$150 million.
The new bridge is now proposed at 792m long - 365m longer than originally planned - and includes a 274m span over the inlet. The piers would remain out of the water. The additional length is needed because of continuing settlement problems encountered with the recently-built approaches for the new bridge, said the department.
Final selection and award of the contract is expected in summer 2008, with a view to the bridge being completed by the end of 2011.
