Italy's minister of infrastructure and transport Altero Matteoli has written a letter to Messina Bridge concessionaire Società Stretto di Messina's president Pietro Ciucci confirming the government's commitment to restarting the project.
Details of the letter were published by the ministry on Friday. It describes the project linking Sicily to the mainland as an urgent priority and asks Ciucci to take steps for resuming the work as soon as possible.
Impregilio was awarded the contract three years ago but the project was subsequently put on hold.
