A lorry carrying compressed natural gas struck a rail bridge and caught fire as a freight train crossed overhead in New York, USA.

The lorry driver was seriously injured in the accident last Thursday evening. The train did not stop during the incident and it was not damaged. Media pictures show flames shooting into the sky as the vehicle lies tilted under the steel structure.

The town supervisor, Chris Koetzle, declared a state of emergency, which was lifted later that day.

The Maple Avenue Bridge in Glenville has signs warning of its 3m height clearance. Local press reports suggest that it is a common site for vehicle strikes.
