Six shortlisted contractors have submitted tenders to build the Twin Sails Bridge in Poole, southern England.

The council is now assessing the cost and quality of each bid. At the same time, final approval is being sought from the Department of Transport for a US$25.6 million grant to help fund the project. The council is also seeking approval for a US$16.7 million loan from the South West Regional Development Agency.

The aim is to announce the award of the contract in early 2010 following a special meeting of the full council in January. Construction could then start in the spring, with the bridge scheduled to open before the end of 2011.

The design of the opening bridge is by Gifford & Partners with Wilkinson Eyre Architects and mechanical engineer Bennett.
