Sri Lanka’s government has a initiated a project to build a new bridge across the Batticaloa Lagoon at a cost of US$15.8 million.
The government of Japan has agreed to provide a grant to fund construction of the bridge. The bridge will reduce the road journey to cross the lagoon from 32km to just 300m. Ferries currently cross the lagoon but these have limited capacity.
