President Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka yesterday declared open the Mannar Bridge connecting Mannar Island with the mainland.
The US$21.5 million bridge, which is 157m long, restores full road access for the 41,000 people living on the island.
The original bridge and 3.14km causeway were built in the 1930s. The bridge had been damaged by a bomb in 1990 and the route had been restored using a temporary steel bridge, which had weight restrictions.
