The first vehicle to pay the bridge's toll was a 1923 Lincoln that had also been the first to cross the existing and original bridges. Client for the work is Washington State Department of Transportation and the contractor was a joint venture of Bechtel and Kiewit. The suspension bridge has a main span of 853m, supported from 155m-high concrete towers. Provision has been made for the addition of a second deck to carry either road or light rail traffic.
