Tolls levied on cars and haulage vehicles crossing Indonesia’s Surabaya-Madura cable-stayed bridge - which is also known as the Suramadu Bridge – have been halved, with the intention of significantly reducing costs for traffic crossing to and from the island of Madura and stimulating development.
Last year the government withdrew all tolls for motorcycles, but retained those for four-wheeled vehicles. Now tolls on large trucks have been cut to just US$3.40 and on private cars to just over US$1.
Bridge concessionaire Jasa Marga will not be adversely impacted by the reduction in income; its contract with the government is to operate the bridge and this is not linked to revenue. Jasa Marga corporate secretary Muhammad Sofyan confirmed that the company is paid an annual fee by the state.
The governor of East Java had already argued that nobody would invest in Madura if the fee remained too high.
