US secretary of transportation Mary Peters has called on all states to carry out immediate inspections of any steel deck truss bridges similar to the I-35 bridge that collapsed this week.
According to the US Federal Highway Adminstration (FHWA), there are 756 of the steel deck truss bridges in the USA. FHWA has issued guidance to all state transportation agencies and bridge owners strongly advising them to conduct an inspection or, at minimum, review inspection reports.
Peters has announced US$5 million in immediate federal funding for rebuilding of the collapsed bridge and pledged that any future requests for additional funds will be quickly evaluated and processed.
