Cardiff's riverscape is changing this week as the new Pont y Werin, or People's Bridge, is lifted into place by the UK's largest mobile crane.

The 1,200t crane is lifting in the four sections, which weigh between 38t and 46t. Work began yesterday installing three sections from the Cardiff bank and the final piece will be installed on 31 March from the Penarth bank.

The bridge includes a 20m-long opening section that will allow river traffic to pass.

Finance for the US$6.6 million crossing of the River Ely includes US$1.6 million from sustainable transport charity Sustrans, which won major lottery funding in 2007 to create routes across the UK for pedestrians and cyclists. The scheme in the Welsh capital is one of 79 projects benefitting from the award.

The rest of Pont y Werin's funding comes from the Welsh Assembly Government, Cardiff Council, Cardiff Harbour Authority and the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The bridge will open to the public on 8 June. It is being built by Dean & Dyball under a design and construction contract.
