USA launches bridge performance programme
The USA's Federal Highway Administration is initiating a 20-year research programme examining long-term bridge performance. The project will include detailed inspection, periodic evaluation and testing, continuous monitoring, and forensic investigation of representative samples of bridges throughout the USA to capture and document their performance. The programme is intended to produce a high-quality database aimed at improving the value, success and efficiency of bridge management systems. The FHWA's National Bridge Inventory contains details of more than 590,000 bridges, tunnels and culverts on public roads of which approximately 156,000 were identified last year as being structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.
