Transport minister Rosie Winterton announced government support for Sunderland City Council's proposal for a new crossing of the River Wear. "This will create a much-needed new gateway into the city centre, alleviate the congestion currently experienced at crossing points and make a major contribution to regeneration along the river corridor," she said.

The bridge design by Spence Associates and Techniker was chosen in September 2005 following a design competition, but has still not been unveiled. The council declined to release any details of the winning concept, saying at the time that it was being kept under wraps until the 'structurally challenging, complex scheme' has been 'resolved'.

The plans are for a new four-lane multi-user bridge between Claxheugh and Castletown. It will accommodate road traffic, pedestrians and cyclists.

The government decision means that Sunderland City Council can move forward with detailed planning. Main construction works could potentially begin in late 2011, with completion in 2014.

The scheme is being promoted by Sunderland City Council, in partnership with the Sunderland Arc regeneration company.
