Engineers from the Orange County, USA, chapter of charity Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA) are this month making the first of three trips to Kenya to build a bridge to provide safe access to a health clinic. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is providing a US$10,000 annual grant towards the chapter's work.

The bridge will allow people from the community of Edana to reach the Segera Mission Clinic on the opposite site of the Ewaso Ng'iro River. The river cannot be crossed during the six-month rainy season, when the only way to reach the clinic is to make a 30km round trip. The result that serious health conditions go untreated.

The suspended cable footbridge will be 40m long and is costing US$39,000.
