High-Point Rendel is responsible for the detailed design and construction supervision of the whole 8km link, which is being built under three contracts. Architect Zaha Hadid was invited in 1997 to submit proposals for the main Gateway Bridge. Her design has three asymmetric arches, intended to symbolise the dune hills in the desert. The arches are post-tensioned concrete boxes up to deck level and continue as steel boxes above the deck.

Archirodon is building the US$175 million central section including the main bridge. The two approach contracts are already under way.
