Commissioners of the Delaware River Port Authority have approved contracts for a new deck for the Walt Whitman Bridge and monitoring of the project. The US$128 million construction contract has been awarded to American Bridge and the US$11.7 million monitoring will be carried out by a joint venture of Urban Engineers and URS.
The project includes the removal of the suspended span, installation of a new lightweight concrete-filled jointless grid deck, structural improvements, new parapets and a new barrier.
The suspension bridge carries seven lanes of traffic over the Delaware River in the north east of the USA. It was opened to traffic in 1957.
