The bridge was due to be completed mid-February 2016 but according to Val Fox, contracts manager, Sisk, it may open to traffic before Christmas this year.
This 63m-long and 18m-wide Arena Bridge with 3.5-metre-wide pedestrian and bike lanes on either side will connect Bristol's Arena Island to the rest of the city. It is being built by John Sisk and Son with structural engineer and designer Pell Frischmann. The steel bridge superstructure was prefabricated by specialist sub-contractor Cimolai at its factories in Pordenone, Roveredo and San Giorgio in northern Italy. The difficult access to the site limited the size of the 132 structural steel members which weigh over 800 tonnes. The sections were assembled and welded on site prior to the bridge receiving its final coat of paint. The largest single piece weighs 28 tonnes.
