The mast apparently snapped during a lifting operation of the double-leaved bascule bridge.

The bridge has been closed to motor vehicles since the incident but has remained open to pedestrians.

Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole Council said that engineers have removed the broken mast from the bridge. The council added that there are some further mechanical issues that need addressing before the bridge can reopen and that engineers are continuing to make progress.

The bridge has suffered a number of problems since 2018, including needing repairs in 2020 (link opens in new tab).
