Specialist engineers in England are preparing to move a steel rail bridge over the Lawley Middleway, a busy city road in Birmingham.

The 1,631t structure is part of a one-mile stretch of five viaducts that bring the HS2 railway into Birmingham’s Curzon Street Station. For the last two years, construction on the bridge has been taking place alongside the Digbeth Canal.

Balfour Beatty VINCI and move contractor the Dutch company Mammoet will collaborate on the operation, which involves jacking the structure on to two self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). Mammoet has previously worked on the installation of a 6,200t bridge on HS2 (link opens in new tab).

On Friday, Mammoet will rotate the bridge by 90 degrees and then over the weekend, it will be moved into place over the road.

HS2 is a project to build a new railway between London and the city of Birmingham in the West Midlands region of the UK.
