Austroads has published updated bridge barrier guidelines, including methods for retrofitting existing structures.

Standardised Bridge Barrier Design Guidelines is accompanied by a research report. The two documents update Austroads’ 2013 guideline.

The new guidance outlines a unified design process for barriers, with advice on suitable materials. It also describes methodologies for evaluating older structures and for retrofitting bridge barriers that are already in place. It covers modelling techniques that will help engineers predict the performance of barriers.

The research report describes how Austroads arrived at the guidelines, describing the consultation with stakeholders, and the 90km/h crash testing, which was carried out in 2023.

Austroads represents transport agencies in Australia and New Zealand.
