Several pieces of steel fell onto the upper deck of the eastern part of the bridge at 5.30pm local time, after an emergency eyebar repair that was installed at the beginning of September failed. Although the pieces hit three vehicles, no-one was injured. At 7pm Caltrans closed the bridge indefinitely and this morning announced that repairs were under way. No estimate has been given for how long the work will take.

The initial repair was carried out during the Labor Day weekend closure when a full inspection of the bridge revealed a crack in an eyebar on the main truss.
