The Virginia Marine Resources Commission has given its unanimous approval for the construction of a new privately-financed toll bridge across the Elizabeth River to replace the now-closed Jordan Bridge.
The proposal from Figg Bridge Developers involves a two-lane bridge with a high-level fixed span to allow clearance for shipping.
Consent from the US Coast Guard is still required before construction of the US$100 million bridge can begin.
The existing 70-year-old bridge has been closed since November because of safety concerns.
