Residents of the English town of Bradford on Avon will be invited to vote next week on proposals for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge that has been the subject of campaigns for and against its construction. Wiltshire County Council granted planning permission in February for the town council's proposal for the single-mast suspension bridge designed by Mark Lovell Design Engineers. But the scheme has proved controversial locally and two campaigns, Back the Bridge and Bradford Bridge Concern have taken opposing stances on the proposals. Wiltshire County Council is organising the poll, which was agreed to at a meeting of the town council and had been proposed by the campaign against the bridge. Voters will be asked: "Should the Town Council's footbridge, estimated at £850,000 be put on hold until local people have been presented with an acceptable design that does not impose an unacceptable financial burden on the town?" Back the Bridge describes the poll as a waste of money, saying that the new bridge already has planning permission and that the question people will be asked to vote on is unclear.
