A long loop over water will bring pedestrians and cyclists on to a crossing over the bridge that takes Singapore’s Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) over the Kallang River.
The bridge is part of a new route will cut the cycling time from Bishan to Central Business District from an hour to 30 minutes.
The 682m elevated bridge is a complex project because of the need to carry out construction work over live traffic on the PIE. Construction is set to start in October, according to Malaysia’s Construction Industry Development Board.
It replaces a shorter bridge with stairs. The new bridge will have lifts alongside a staircase for pedestrians. An initial design for a cable-stayed bridge was drawn up, but the final design with 22 supporting columns was seen as safe to construct and easier to maintain.
Contractor Samwoh will start work in October and the project will be completed by the end of 2027. The architect is AWP.
