Four high-top cranes are towering over the construction site of an 811m bridge in the south west of Norway.

Liebherr has supplied the cranes to the 50m high Ytre-Steinsund Bridge project. The coastal site is exposed to wind and waves, presenting some challenges when handling concrete and steel components that must be brought in by boat.

Anchoring the cranes has proved challenging. Three are installed on cross bases with solid concrete foundations. One is positioned in the fjord on a bespoke steel frame cantilevered over the water and anchored to the seabed.

Skanska signed the building contract for the five-span bridge with Vestland County in 2023 (link opens in new tab). Also involved is Frico Group, which is providing specialised services, including quality control, security and tailor-made solutions for construction and installation.

The bridge is expected to be completed at the end of 2026.
