The original precast footbridge was damaged beyond repair by flooding in 2009.

The new Navvies Bridge was assembled on site before the main arch span was lifted into place in Workington  with a 1,000t mobile crane. The new structure spans the river from new bases on each bank, removing obstructions from the river and making it more resistant to future flooding. The overall bridge length is 84.8m between abutments.

The project is due to be completed in September 2011 and has been undertaken for Cumbria County Council by Morgan Sindall.
