Danish MPs have backed a recommendation for the US$6.96 billion Fehmarnbelt crossing to be a tunnel rather than a bridge. An 18km immersed tunnel is now the preferred option for Danish politicians, who supported the solution proposed by Femern, the state-owned company in charge of planning the fixed link.
Femern had concluded that the tunnel would entail fewer risks than the cable-stayed bridge. Previously, the bridge had been seen as the preferred option.??
The Fehmarnbelt link is now set to comprise an 18km combined motorway and rail tunnel immersed under the Fehmarnbelt between Rødbyhavn in Denmark and Puttgarden in Germany. It is due to open in 2020.
