A detailed technical study of the Ibar Bridge in northern Kosovo has started.

The six-month technical study, commissioned by the EU and carried out by IRD Engineering, will assess the structure’s seismic resilience, technical condition and its role in the landscape.

Ibar Bridge is seen as a symbolic crossing between the communities of North and South Mitrovica. It was once considered a buffer zone between Kosovo Albanians in the south and Serbs in the north and was previously the site of a military checkpoint.

The pedestrian crossing was refurbished in 2001 by Freyssinet, under a contract paid for by the French government and overseen by the UN interim administration. The work included two decorative arches, and reconstruction of the slab and replacement of bearings and joints.
