The exceptional weather meant that more water fell in the county than had ever been recorded in a 24-hour period. There was more than 300mm in some places and unprecedented amounts of water and debris have been flowing at high speed along rivers and under bridges.

Standard practice is for the bridges to be inspected every two years and July's inspection of Northside Bridge found it to be structurally sound. Inspectors are now checking all of the county's bridges for signs of distress and calling in structural engineers if required. Aerial inspections are also taking place but examinations below the waterline will remain difficult until water levels subside.

Several bridges remain closed, including Calva Bridge in Workington which seems likely to collapse.
