The Highways Agency will now reprogramme work needed on the Piffs Elm Bridge to allow a full review of the project to take place.

The review will consider all concerns raised by stakeholders and the local community and how the project can be delivered in a shorter programme. It had been estimated that the scheme would take 47 weeks to complete. Work was to have started in March 2012 to demolish the bridge and replace it with a new structure.

"We recognise that this bridge is an important link between Cheltenham and Gloucester and it is our priority to ensure it is in good condition and safe for road users in the longer term,” said Highways Agency regional director in the south west Mike Wilson. "After listening to recent feedback from the local community, the Highways Agency is going to investigate more options for this scheme. This work is essential, but it is imperative it is carried out causing the minimum disruption and we will announce details of the revised proposals as soon as possible."
