The 252m-long four-lane bridge across the Nipigon River will carry Highway 11/17, which forms part of the Trans-Canada Highway linking the country's 10 provinces.

Ontario's Ministry of Northern Development & Mines and its Ministry of Transportation awarded the contract for what will be the first major cable-stayed bridge in the province.

The need for in-water structures has been eliminated by the design, which involves a three-tower centre pier and sequential installation of the bridge deck working outwards to the east and west abutments.

The bridge is scheduled to be opened in mid-2017.
