The US$1 billion Presidio Parkway will replace the existing Doyle Drive, which is structurally and seismically vulnerable. The new 2.5km route forms a southern access to the Golden Gate Bridge and runs through the Presidio, a 600ha park at the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula. Two short stretches will be in tunnel and twin high-level viaducts approximately 400m long will carry traffic at the western end of the parkway.
A Hochtief-led consortium will build the parkway under a public-private partnership contract. Preparatory contracts have already begun, including a US$48.4 million contract being carried out by CC Myers to build an interchange, a bridge and the southbound high-level viaduct.
One of the uses of the final US$46 million tranche of funding will be to replace a bridge rated as California's worst for structural sufficiency.
