Taiwan has begun construction of a 5.4km-long crossing linking Kinmen and a neighbouring island.
The focus of the crossing is a cable-stayed bridge with five towers and spans of 280m. Its approaches will be of prestressed concrete box girder construction.
At its closest point, the Kinmen group of islands is 6km from the Chinese city of Xiamen. Proposals for a bridge to Xiamen have also been discussed.
