India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved a renovation programme worth US$12.8 million for a historic bascule bridge in a Kolkata port.

The double leaf bascule bridge in Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port was installed sixty years ago by Wagner-Biro Bridge Systems. The project will see it strengthened and given an electromechanical upgrade with the aim of improving reliability and safety.

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) will implement the project and the work will be carried out by Mumbai-based H & H Fressinet.
