Ireland's planning board An Bord Pleanála has given its approval to proposals for a new cable-stayed bridge over the River Nore in Kilkenny.

The bridge part forms part of plans for a new central access road to relieve congestion in the area and ease traffic volumes on two existing bridges.

Proposals had been submitted to the planning board last year. This week's recommendation in favour of the project follows a three-day oral hearing that was held in December.

The scheme is being promoted by Kilkenny's borough and county councils.
