The national infrastructure plan runs from 2018-2029, representing a total investment of US$ 80 billion and the largest railway expansion in modern times. The plan includes major investment both in new construction and upgrading and modernisation of existing railway infrastructure.

The government's goal is to establish new high-speed railways so that both Stockholm and Gothenburg and Malmö are better linked to promote the option of train travel over air. This expansion must take place in a cost-effective manner, the plan states.

In highways the major investments and maintenance measures on the state road network include Öland Bridge on highway 137, Tjörn Bridge on the E6.20 and the bridge over the Kalix River.
