Plans for a new bridge over the Columbia River have been backed by the Metro regional government, which serves the Portland area of Oregon in the USA. Five members of Metro's council voted to offer provisional support for construction of the replacement bridge, with two opposed.
The bridge would carry the I-5 highway as well as light rail.
Metro's support is contingent on several conditions, which will affect whether it approves the scheme in subsequent stages. These include there being direct local oversight for all major planning, design, engineering, finance and construction decisions.
