Millennium Bridge to close after only two days
London's Millennium Bridge is to close this evening, only two days after its official opening, for engineers to investigate the cause of its excessive movement. The 320m long bridge crosses the River Thames in central London and provides a link between St Paul's Cathedral and the new Tate Modern art gallery. The suspension structure had to be closed for 10 minutes shortly after opening on Saturday when the bridge started swaying noticeably. The problem has been blamed on a combination of high winds and the large number of people who flocked to cross the new footbridge. Engineers will investigate the problem and if necessary, carry out remedial work to reduce the movement.
