Work to design and build a new bridge over the Danube River between Hungary and Slovakia is set to begin in September, after the European Commission agreed to provide funding of €100 million (US$112 million) for the project. The new bridge will connect the Hungarian town of Komárom with Komarno in Slovakia; the existing crossing cannot carry trucks of more than 20t.

The Slovakian government will receive a grant of €47.6 million and Hungary €52.5 million, giving a total package of around €117 million. Work is scheduled to begin in September, with completion slated for the second quarter of 2019. The much-delayed bridge was originally intended to open in 2016 – 2017.
