The project includes transit and highway improvements as well as a new bridge. Five alternatives are being analysed as part of the draft environmental impact statement process. The alternatives cover replacement or supplemental bridge options, with provision for either buses or light rail. A "no build" option is also included for cost comparison purposes.

US transportation secretary Mary Peters said during a visit to Oregon yesterday that federal funding could contribute up to 80% of the project cost.

Open houses will take place this month to display the proposals, and preliminary findings will be released next month covering the bridge, transit and funding options. The draft environmental statement and locally-preferred alternative are due to be issued in February 2008.
