"This construction of the new bridge will create jobs and is necessary for our country's economic viability," he said.

Transport Canada is leading the work programme and the environmental assessment for the project. The public, local advisory councils, the private sector and community groups will have the opportunity to participate and comment throughout the environmental assessment phase.

The project has six parts, including a new Nuns’ Island Bridge as well as the construction of the bridge for the St Lawrence and demolition of the existing structure.

Since 2009, investments totalling US$375m have been allocated to continue to keep the Champlain Bridge safe until the new crossing is complete.
