Sunderland city councillors in northern England will take key decisions next week on the next steps for a transport project that includes a landmark bridge reaching 180m above the River Wear.

The meeting on Wednesday will include discussion of a report examining the economic benefits, public support, construction plans and financial costs for the bridge and its approach roads.

The bridge's design is by architect Stephen Spence and structural engineer Techniker, who have now drawn up further detailed construction and maintenance plans which have been reviewed by the council and are part of the report to the cabinet.

Funds of US$217 million can be made available for the scheme, including US$37.5 million from the council itself.
