The engineering team working on the Clyde Arc in Glasgow has developed a system for repairing the bridge by replacing all 28 connectors on the hangers. A temporary hanger has been installed to replace the failed one and the team led by contractor Edmund Nuttall has started to mobilise barges, cranes and access equipment to help install temporary supports ahead of work on the connector replacements.
The bridge has been closed to traffic since one of the cast steel connections between the arch and a cable fractured two weeks ago and the cable fell to the deck. A crack was subsequently found on a second connector.
The temporary support system consists of specially-fabricated saddle frames that will sit on top of the arch. Strand jacks will transfer the deck load, allowing the team to dismantle the hangers and replace both top and bottom forked connectors.
